Monsters’ Carnel Cline, tries to get past Cool Runnings Eustace “Boss” Freman and Andre Findley
After besting East 44-39 on Saturday, Cool Runnings overpowered the Monsters 64-47 on Sunday.
Dwayne “Kobo” Penn had a game high 22 points and Nathaniel “Nat” Malone poured in 21 for Cool Runnings. Juanito Diaz added another 11 to the tally. Alton “Sugar” Vanterpool topped Monsters with 11, while Andre Findley and Carnel Clyne added 10 points respectively.
“We came out a little flat tonight, but we picked it up in the second quarter defensively,” Malone told Island Sun Sports. “We started getting some rebounds, eliminated the second chances from them, took care of the basketball and our shots were going in tonight, so it made the game a lot easier.”
Sporting just five men, the Virgin Gorda Mystics powered past East, 53-42. Mark Noel led the way with 15 points as four players scored in double figures. Gary “The Glove” Hillhouse dropped in another 12, Carlton Herbert 11 and Joel Levons, 10. Clint Weston had a game high 19 points to lead East scores, and Benson Thomas dropped in 12.
“We only had five and we had to push it to the limit,” Herbert said. “We paced ourselves and played good defense.”
After losing to the Monsters, 45-39 on Saturday, Genesis collected their first victory of the season, a 61-46 triumph over Why Not. Royan George poured in a game high 20 points for Genesis. Ross Negrid added 17 and Phillip Glasgow chipped in 17. For Monsters, Curtis Mendez and Syv Lettsome had 13 points each.
“We got the first one, almost had two—but at least we have the first one,” Alan Vergil said. “We lost last night. We were up by four and still lost, the last game we were up by eight and lost, but at least now, we’ve finished the job.”
Why Not’s Coach Joash Victor said his team was in the game but then everything fell apart. “But the guys gave a great effort, so I’ll live with that,” he said. “We played a lot better today in regards to communicating on the defensive end over the last game, which we did and it kept the game close, after being down by 10, we brought it down to four points. That was pretty good considering where we were before, so the communication at least showed improvement, which led to a more competitive game.”
